Principal Design Features Brazing sheet and strip

Applications Commonly used in the manufacture of pistons.

Machinability Machinability of AL 4032 is fair to good. Use of lubricating oils during machining is recommended.

Forming This is basically a forging alloy and forming is done by hot die forging.

Welding The alloy is weldable and use of inert-gas arc welding is the preferred method . Gas welding should be avoided.

Heat Treatment Solution heat treatment is done at 950 F for 1 to 12 hours, depending upon section thickness. Cold water quench.

Forging This is a forging alloy and hot die forging is done at temperatures in the range of 950 F to 700 F.

Hot Working The same comments as for "Forging" apply to hot working. That is hot work in the range of 950 F to 700 F.

Cold Working No data. This alloy is typically hot forged, not cold worked.

Annealing Annealing may be done at 775 F for adequate time for thorough heating, followed by controlled cooling at rate of 50 F per hour to 400 F then air cool.

Aging The alloy may be aged (T6 temper) by first solution heating at 950 F and cold water quenching, followed by a 340 F heating for 10 hours and air cooling.

Tempering Not applicable

Hardening See "Aging".

Other Physical Props Electrical conductivity 33% of copper.

Other Mechanical Props Shear strength for the T6 condition is 38 ksi at room temperature.
